Patient identifiers (MRN and alias)
CareFlow Kids uses two automatic identifiers for each patient:
- MRN (Medical Record Number)
- Alias (human-friendly bundle label)
Both are generated automatically and are not editable.
Why there are two identifiers
MRN (stable clinical identifier)
The MRN is the primary identifier intended for clinical record keeping.
Properties:
- unique per patient
- stable over time
- used for internal linking and database integrity
- displayed for reference
Alias (practical bundle identifier)
The alias is a practical label used to help clinicians quickly recognize the patient bundle in the sidebar.
Properties:
- auto-generated
- designed to be memorable and visually distinct
- used as the main label for loaded bundles
Where you see MRN and alias
In Patient management:
- The alias is shown prominently in the sidebar list of loaded bundles.
- The MRN is available in the patient details view.
Relationship with .pemr bundles
A .pemr bundle represents a single patient record.
- The MRN and alias belong to that patient record.
- When you export a
.pemr, those identifiers remain part of the record. - When you import a
.pemr, CareFlow Kids restores the patient record and its identifiers.
Practical guidance
- Use the alias to quickly select the correct loaded patient bundle.
- Use the MRN when you need a stable identifier for clinical workflows or cross-checking.
